Overview
First of all, what is a platform bed? The main difference between a platform bed vs. a "regular" bed, is that this type of bed is designed to accommodate just a mattress. The base usually consists of a raised, flat, horizontal surface, consisting of wooden slats or solid panels that make up their foundation, thus eliminating the need for a box spring. When you buy a "regular" bed, there is the added cost of the boxspring unit. You save on this added expense when purchasing a platform bed.
The base provides adequate support for almost any brand of mattress by itself. Typically platform beds will feature added space beneath the bed because there is no boxspring unit. This makes the platform bed more open beneath the mattress, allowing for more storage under the bed.
Platform beds usually have a contemporary style that features clean lines, neutral elements and solid color characteristics. Some styles incorporate microfiber or leather padding on a headboard for use as a backrest when sitting in bed.
